Microneedling, also known as dermal needling, is a form of collagen induction therapy. In this treatment, super-fine needles are used to puncture the skin surface and create micro-channels in the dermis (lower level of the skin) which trigger the body’s natural healing response and stimulate the production of collagen and other beneficial processes. These micro-channels also aid the delivery of applied serum/skincare product deep into the skin to assist in this process – with active ingredients (such as soluble collagen and hyaluronic acid/sodium hyaluronate) well known and recommended for their skin rejuvenation properties.
Extremely fine needles are used in the highly-adjustable digital microneedling pen, so there is negligible damage to the skin surface, which heals almost immediately whilst the stimulation triggers changes in the dermis below. Although the initial benefits can be seen within days, the processes leading to enhanced collagen production and skin tightening and rejuvenation will continue for some time, over the course of several months. Because of the minimally invasive nature of the process, particularly in comparison to ablative laser, dermabrasion and chemical skin peel procedures, the area of treatment is not significantly noticeable to the naked eye (or if so, rarely beyond 24 hours post-treatment), and the treatment can be repeated without concern of damaging the skin surface.
Initially developed by medical professionals to reduce scarring from acne and other skin conditions, microneedling was found to be equally applicable to more general skin rejuvenation, as well as reducing wrinkles, fine lines, sun-damage, hyper-pigmentation, age spots, stretch-marks, dry skin and even as part of a treatment plan for alopecia.
